The verdict was based on a range of factors, including accessibility, the proportion of journeys that take off or land on time, the length of queues and the general friendliness of staff.

For Gatwick, the main stress-inducing factor is that it punches above its weight. It ranks as the second busiest airport in the country but only has one runway, making congestion and bottlenecks everyday occurrences.

It also means that one scheduling blunder can cause the whole house of cards to come tumbling down, causing widespread disruption for travellers.

That being said, Gatwick was generally reviewed highly by customers.

The Telegraph even recently named it the sixth best airport in Britain (out of 20) and third best in the capital.

Gatwick wasn’t the only British airport to rank on the “most stressful” list – Manchester airport one-upped the capital by ranking at number three.
