1. Celebrate Napoli on the Road’s Soho arrival

By Courtney Pochin

The second Napoli on the Road won the top prize at the 50 Top Pizza Awards back in 2024, I knew it was destined for big things. Now the third Napoli on the Road has landed in Soho, and it’s a very different vibe from the cheery neighbourhood Chiswick and Richmond locations. Sleek and modern, it’s just what you’d expect from a trendy central London eatery, but the food is the same fantastic fare Michele Pascarella is renowned for.

A few items are exclusive to this location, which I’d urge you not to miss – look to the Da Condividere (to share) section. The Triple Crunch is a highlight: pizza that’s steamed, fried, then baked and topped with tomato sauce, fior di latte, Calabrian salame, chilli jam, and parsley. Alternatively, the Cime e Salsiccia is like a pizza sandwich, made with darker flour, cime di rapa cream, smoked mozzarella, sausage burger, and nori seaweed powder. For a dose of carb heaven, don’t skip the Gateau di Patate – layers of crispy baked potatoes and mashed potatoes with rosemary raclette and grated cheese.

Let’s be honest though, you’re here for the world’s best pizza: Ricordi d’Infanzia. It has a classic Neapolitan base, smothered in a rich, slow-cooked beef ragu, drizzled with Parmigiano Reggiano DOP fondue and extra virgin olive oil, then dusted with more grated Parmesan and garnished with fresh basil. It’s by no means the easiest pizza to eat, but my god, it’s good. We should all be putting more pasta dishes on pizza; that’s all I have to say.

Pizza from £13.50. Soho, Chiswick and Richmond. Book here.

By Isabel Fraser

Stepping into Cafe Murano in Marylebone, it seems you’ve taken the quickest flight of your life and ended up in Rome, confirmed as you tuck into rosemary focaccia with a generous splash of Fertuna olive oil.

Opt for deliciously garlic-y pea and scamorza arancini balls, enriched by aged parmesan. Tortellini filled with Westcombe ricotta and spring beans and coated in light sage butter is a highlight, alongside potato gnocchi with mint, Tagiasca olives and braised lamb neck that melts in your mouth. It would be rude not to try the delightfully creamy tiramisu, but not before a palate-cleansing hit of sharp raspberry sorbet. Bellissima.

With sister restaurants in St James’s, Covent Garden and Bermondsey, you’ll never be far from Cafe Murano’s top-quality food and service (without fine dining stuffiness).

Cicchetti from £5, antipasti from £15, primi from £14, secondi from £26, contorni from £6.50. Marylebone, Bermondsey, St James’s, Covent Garden. Book here.

3. Discover Shoreditch’s The Light Bar with serious pub grub energy

By Lola Christina Alao

Recently reopened with a new boss in the kitchen, Shoreditch’s The Light Bar sort of feels like a pub – with a new ‘proper pub grub’ menu to throw you off even more – but it’s actually more of a restaurant-bar-club combo.

Based in an old Victorian power station still standing after 133 years, with elegant arched windows and bare brickwork running throughout the building, it gets off to a strong start with a phenomenal burger. It puts shame on the thin, sloppy concoctions you might be unlucky enough to get at your standard boozer; this one is a tender dry-aged beef patty topped with Applewood smoked cheddar and relish. That first bite tastes heavenly.

Elsewhere, head chef Jake Ayliffe’s (ex Rogues) new menu fuses Asian and British flavours together, with some hints of Greece thrown in too: BBQ chicken thigh skewer with a silk chilli and honey glaze, a fluffy wood-fired flatbread which is the perfect vehicle for thick tzatziki with sharp pickled red onion. And when night time hits, they serve up regular DJ nights blasting an eclectic mix of songs in their top floor club space The Timber Loft. This Sunday it’s a Bank Holiday special with producer and DJ trio Phone Traxxx.

Bar bites from £6, dips: £5, plates from £12. 233 Shoreditch High Street, Shoreditch, E1 6PJ. Book here.

4. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in London with the best tacos, tequila and fiestas

Ixchel

Best for: the authentic experience

To get the fiesta started, Ixchel have lined up a live Latin music trio, plus an agave tasting flight in the colours of the Mexican flag – a miniature spicy peach margarita, mezcal-spiked horchata and a cucumber jalapeño margarita, all priced at £9. To make sure all that alcohol doesn’t go straight to your head, try their special: the short rib mole.

Small plates from £5, larger plates from £27. 5 May. Book here

Madera at Treehouse London

Best for: if you just can’t get enough of tacos

Unlimited tacos? Erm, yes please. Eat as many tacos as your heart (and stomach) desires at Madera’s Cinco de Mayo Fiesta. For just £38, the tacos just keep on coming, with a backdrop of DJ sets, dancers and stunning skyline views from the 16th floor restaurant.

Tickets, £38pp. Marylebone. Book here.

Their brand new pizza is made with Crust Bros’ freshly prepared dough, topped with a tasty birria gravy base, tender birria meat, and a big sprinkling of smoked mozzarella and parmesan cheese.
