It was a big weekend for people with a sweet tooth in London.
Cake Picnic returned to the capital, an event which saw 500 foodies descend on Greenwich Park to enjoy unlimited slices of homemade cake in the sunshine.
And hundreds of people also made their way over to Covent Garden to celebrate the launch of a brand new dessert shop – Get Baked Feat. Godfrey’s.
Yes, viral bakery brand Get Baked has finally launched a permanent site in London, after years of begging from fans.
And the new location sees Get Baked partner with speciality popcorn brand, Godfrey’s, as part of an ‘ambitious masterplan to build the UK’s greatest entertainment snack company’.

The goal is to create and sell snacks that people associate with the best nights: Cinema trips, theatre dates, sofa movie marathons, and guilty late-night binge-watches.
As well as popcorn, chocolate bars, and premium pick and mix, the shop is stocked with some of Get Baked’s most popular products, including the legendary Bertha cake.
Priced at £20 a slice, Bertha is a ginormous piece of 24-layer chocolate cake that looks like something straight out of Matilda, with 12 layers of dark chocolate sponge sandwiched between 12 layers of milk and dark chocolate ganache.
As well as the classic version, there’s a limited-edition white chocolate caramel corn version available, and a milk chocolate one too.
Customers can also buy cookies, brownies, and pies in flavours such as Caramac and Armadillo (chocolate biscuit crust with dark chocolate ganache, salted butterscotch, and Daim pieces).
If that weren’t enough, the shop is stocked with soda and themed merch too.
The shop opened on Saturday, July 4, and the first 500 customers through the doors were treated to free Bertha.
And it’s fair to say people went nuts trying to nab a slice, with videos of queues stretching down the street being shared on social media.
TikToker @grace.wisbey claimed she waited ‘for four hours’ to secure a free slice of cake, while @london_foodiess said they’d waited three hours.
And while Grace claims the wait time was ‘crazy’, she admits she’d definitely do it all over again, as she felt the cake was worth it
‘It’s really rich, but the perfect weekend treat,’ she said.
Food blogger @southbankfoodie felt similarly. Sharing a look at her visit to the shop on Instagram, she hailed the store as ‘the ultimate dessert parlour’, and described Bertha as ‘pure chocolate heaven’.
‘It’s indulgent, decadent, and even better than I imagined,’ she wrote.
Get Baked’s founder, Rich Meyers, told Metro cake fans were queuing up outside the shop from 8AM on Saturday – despite it not opening until midday.
‘It was ridiculous,’ he said. ‘We were meant to give away 500 free slices of cake, but we ended up giving away more than that as there were just so many people and we felt bad that they’d been waiting for a long time.’
He added: ‘It was a great day, very busy, and we had a brass band playing which people seemed to enjoy.’
And things aren’t going to be calming down for Get Baked anytime soon, as the brand has some very exciting stuff in the pipeline.

Hot off the heels of popular collabs with Lungi Mhlanga, who created the internet’s favourite jam on toast cookies, and Edd Kimber, who whipped up that viral chocolate caramel cake, Rich claims he’s busy working on a few more top-secret collabs that will be launching online soon.
He’s also going to be partnering with an iconic London store for a project that’s being kept under wraps, and Get Baked is going to be heading down under in August for a two-week pop-up in Australia, with ice cream brand Messina.
‘We’re probably going to do some more stuff with Lungi and Edd,’ he shares, but the brand’s big focus right now is on Godfrey’s.
‘We want to launch it into retail, and have it become a brand you find in cinemas and theatres. Given where the shop is located, it just makes perfect sense.’
