One of London’s busiest roads has been closed for hours after a fatal incident overnight.

The Victoria Embankment has been closed since around 2am after a man in his 20s is thought to have fallen from a height, Metropolitan Police told Metro.

The force said: ‘Police were called by the London Ambulance Service at 02.06am on Thursday, 25 June to Victoria Embankment, following reports of a man believed to have fallen from a height.

‘Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man in his 20s died at the scene. Officers are working to identify his next-of-kin.

‘Enquiries remain ongoing and a scene is in place.’

The death is thought to be unexpected but not suspicious, Metro understands.

The road and cycle superhighway are expected to remain closed until tomorrow, officers at the scene told Metro.

Drivers and cyclists have to use a diversion to get around the scene under Waterloo Bridge, where a forensic tent has been erected.

Another cordon is in place on the cycle path outside Temple Underground station.

Debris and emergency equipment were seen strewn across the cycle lane, with a section cordoned off with police tape.

Westbound traffic in the area has been diverted onto Temple Place and around King’s College, and eastbound diversion runs through Whitehall and Strand.

Strand and Trafalgar Square have severe delays this morning, with traffic hardly moving.
