Detectives investigating how a newborn was abandoned on a freezing roadside have hit out at social media trolls for ‘abusing’ the child’s mother.

The baby, named only as Elsa, was found crying in a shopping bag with only a blanket to shield her from sub-zero temperatures in Newham, east London, at around 9.15pm last Thursday.

She had been left by High Street South – a busy dual carriageway – where it gives onto a long footpath known as Greenway.

It was soon discovered she was just an hour old when she was found, still had her umbilical cord attached, and was so cold that doctors couldn’t pick up her temperature for three hours.

Police don’t know who or where Elsa’s parents are and have expressed concern for both the child and her mother’s welfare.

Chief Superintendent Simon Crick on Friday warned that people criticising the mother online ‘have no idea what [she] is going through’ and risk deterring her from coming forward.

‘All of the information we have so far suggests it’s highly likely Baby Elsa was born after a concealed pregnancy’ and was not known to any hospitals, charities or social services, he said.

‘I want to appeal directly again to Baby Elsa’s mother. Your daughter is safe and well, but we need make sure that you are too.

‘You might need urgent medical care and support, and we can help you. Please call 999 and speak to us, or go to hospital.

‘Lastly, I’d like to say that although comments online have been largely incredibly kind, supportive and understanding, there have been a small number of abusive and negative comments that are both unnecessary and unhelpful.

‘All of us are looking at this from a position of privilege in that we have no idea what Baby Elsa’s mother is going through.

‘Please consider what you post – and the possibility that she might even read it – and help us with our primary aim of identifying her to make sure that she’s OK.’

Elsa, who was described as black or mixed race, has no injuries and was born after a full term.

A family court heard the baby was discharged on Thursday to foster parents who have temporary custody while she is identified.

Detectives say they’ve identified a woman and a man they want to speak to from a ‘considerable volume of CCTV footage’ in the area.

The woman was described as ‘black, was wearing a large dark coat with a light coloured scarf or hood around her neck and had a rucksack on her back’ and was seen entering the Greenway half an hour before Baby Elsa was found.

The man was said to be ‘wearing a dark coloured hooded coat with a backpack’ and was seen exiting the Greenway around five minutes before the baby was found.
