All the Labour MPs calling on Starmer to quit following humiliating local election defeat thumbnail

Ministers have now joined the chorus of backbenchers calling on Sir Keir Starmer to stand down after the party suffered heavy losses across England, Scotland and Wales.

Victims minister Alex Davies-Jones also resigned shortly after.

Their resignations followed Miatta Fahnbulleh stepping down as faith and communities minister.

The Peckham MP told Sir Keir: “Our country faces enormous challenges and people are crying out for the scale of change that requires.

“The public does not believe that you can lead this change – and nor do I.”

Joe Morris quit his role as a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Health Secretary Wes Streeting on Monday.

Tom Rutland, a PPS to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds, has also stepped down.

Meanwhile, Sally Jameson, a PPS to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, also joined calls for Sir Keir to lay out a timetable for his departure from office.

Melanie Ward, PPS to the deputy prime minister David Lammy also quit her role along with Cabinet Office PPS Naushabah Khan, with both calling for new leadership at the head of the party.

At the local elections on May 7, Labour lost more than 1400 council seats, while Nigel Farage’s Reform UK and Zack Polanski’s Green Party secured historic wins, including their first London councils.

One of those is the MP for Hornsey and Friern Barnet Catherine West, who demanded the prime minister set a timetable of September for his departure.

Health secretary Wes Streeting, former deputy leader Angela Rayner, and Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham have all been mooted as contenders to replace Starmer should the opportunity arise.

But she stopped short of issuing a formal leadership challenge.

A longer timetable would allow time for Mr Burham to make a return to the Commons and join the leadership contest. His initial attempt to return to parliament in the Gordon and Denton by-election was blocked by Sir Keir.

Now, the number of MPs calling for Sir Keir’s departure is only growing.

Some have called for immediate change to leadership, while others have pushed for a timetabled departure this year.
