Thousands of avid runners and keen amateurs will take to the streets of London this month as the annual London Marathon returns.

More than 40,000 people took on the 26.2-mile run last year after Lionesses Leah Williamson, Jill Scott and Ellen White got the race underway.

Kenyan Amos Kipruto won the men’s race in 2022, crossing the finish line in 2:04:39, while Ethiopian runner Yalemzerf Yehualaw recovered from a fall to win the women’s race.

Every year, people watch in person or on TV to see the hordes of runners – and a fair few famous faces – conquering the iconic route.

But when is this year’s marathon?

Last year’s marathon took place in October due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has seen the annual event moved for the past three years.

However, this year, the 43rd event returns to its traditional spring date.

How can you apply for the London Marathon?

It’s too late to apply for a ballot position in this year’s TCS London Marathon – all hopeful runners must have entered by Friday, October 7 2022.

However, if you’re keen to still run this year, you can apply to run in a charity place.

There are usually more people interested in running for a charity than there are charity places available, so often charities will select participants based on their connection with the cause and how much money they are realistically able to raise. They will ask you questions in order to determine this.

The charity may also ask you to pay a registration fee when you apply for your TCS London Marathon charity place.

If you’d prefer to apply for next year’s marathon, you’ll be able to register after this year’s race ends.

You need to submit your name, email address, gender, date of birth, and home address with your application form.

You will receive a confirmation email once your application has been submitted.

The ballot is drawn at random giving everyone who enters the same chance at taking part.

According to the London Marathon website, if you’d like to increase your chances of nabbing a spot, you could opt to donate your entry fee when you enter the UK ballot, as ballot applicants who do this are entered into a second draw.

The ballot is free to enter but if you’re successful in securing a place, the cost for UK runners to take part is £49.99, while for international runners it is £120, plus a £26 carbon offset levy.
