Three people have been killed and one critically injured after a car they were travelling in crashed at a popular retail park.

Police were called at 11.26pm last night to reports of a collision at Staples Corner, near Brent Cross retail park.

They found five people, all believed to be men aged in their early 20s, who had been in the same car.

Three of them were pronounced dead at the scene, while two were taken to hospital where one is in a critical condition while the other’s condition is not life-threatening.

No other vehicles are thought to have been involved.

The air ambulance was scrambled to the scene in north west London, along with London Fire Brigade, and London Ambulance Service.

Inspector William Mcdonald, one of the police officers responsible for policing Barnet, said: ‘Emergency services responded last night to what seems to have been a terrible accident.

‘An urgent police investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances, led by detectives from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

‘Officers are in the process of informing the families of the five young people. The families will be supported by specialist officers. I send them my sincere condolences.’

Road closures remain in place at the scene.

There have been no arrests.

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said that a car collided with a pedestrian overbridge on the North Circular.

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: ‘This was a tragic incident attended by our specialist crews who attended alongside our blue light partners to make the scene safe.’

Firefighters were sent to the scene with heavy cutting equipment used in traffic accidents.

The Brigade was called at 11.35pm and stood down by 1.04am.
