A man was shot dead on a busy street in London early this morning, with the killer still at large.

Photos from the scene show forensics officers examining the area in Lewisham for evidence shortly after 5am, while a tent was erected to help in the murder probe.

Police and paramedics attended the scene on Catford Broadway and found a man, believed to be in his 30s, with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers said they were in the process of informing his next of kin, while no arrests have yet been made.

Witnesses saw forensics officers and a large police cordon, while video from the scene too graphic to publish showed the victim lying injured.

The shooting happened place near Lewisham Town Hall, on the A205 South Circular (the Catford Gyratory) at the junction for the A21.

The A21 Rushey Green was closed in both directions, with traffic on roads nearby also moving slowly and buses diverted.

Detectives said they are carrying out ‘extensive fast time enquiries’ to find out what happened and a significant cordon remains in place at the scene.

Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry said: ‘My sympathies and thoughts are with the family and loved ones of this young man who has lost his life in very tragic circumstances.

‘The incident took place in a busy part of south London and I’m hopeful there will have been a number of witnesses who I would appeal to come forward.

‘I know such a shocking incident will cause great concern in the community and want to reassure residents that we have assigned significant resources to this investigation.

‘We also have officers patrolling the local area and I would urge those with concerns to talk to them. They are there to support you.’
