A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a baby was found dead in a London home.
Scotland Yard said they were first called shortly after 2pm on Monday when a woman attended hospital saying she had just given birth.
The grim discovery was then made by officers sent to an address in Taviton Street, Camden, shortly before 4pm.
A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, child neglect and concealment of a birth. He remains in custody.
The Met Police said the baby’s mum remains in a stable condition.
Detective Chief Inspector Sarb Kaur, leading the investigation, said: ‘This is a very complex and sensitive case.
‘At this early stage, we continue to work alongside the NHS to ensure the mother of the baby receives the necessary care in hospital.
‘My detectives from Central North Public Protection team are working on a range of enquires and we await the results of forensic examination before we can establish the full facts of the investigation.’
Photos taken at the scene show a forensics tent erected outside a property on the street, where homes are valued at up to £3 million.
It is a quiet road located 250 yards south of Euston Station, one of central London’s busiest train stations.
The property where the cordon has been erected is a block of flats that is owned by University of London, which told Metro.co.uk it rents out the flats to private tenants.
Taviton Street meanwhile largely consists of buildings used by University College London, including its School of Slavonic and European Studies, and Campbell House, a student hall.
Georgia, 27, a PhD student, told Metro.co.uk: ‘I’m extremely shocked. l did not know stuff like that happened around here. That’s absolutely horrible.
‘I think a while ago someone was shot nearby Euston station, but nothing like this.’
Workers at a nearby student area said they had no idea about the baby’s death.
‘It’s horrible,’ they said.
A UoL spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that the University of London owns properties on Taviton Street, including a block of flats which is rented out to private tenants.
‘We’re aware of a police investigation into reports of a tragic death in the street. The University has not been contacted by the police but will assist with any investigation as required.’
A Met Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called at 2.06pm on Monday, July 8, to reports of a woman presenting at hospital who had given birth.
‘Officers attended a residential address in Taviton Street, Camden, where, following a search of the premises, the body of a newborn baby was found.
‘A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, child neglect and concealment of a birth. He remains in custody at this time.
‘The baby’s mother remains in a stable condition. A crime scene remains in place.’
