Residents said they heard ‘loud bangs’ after a man in his 20s was shot in the head in an attack in Tottenham last night.

Officers responded to an address in Waverley Road at 8.45pm after receiving reports two men had been shot.

Police said a 27-year-old man was treated for a gunshot wound to the head and another man, 26, for a gunshot wound to the leg.

Despite efforts of emergency services, the 27-year-old man died at the scene. The 26-year-old man remains in hospital.

Footage provided to Metro by residents showed shocked residents looking on as the two men were treated and subsequently taken away in an ambulance.

They said they saw a large group of ‘youths’ in the area, many of them with their faces covered, around the time of the shooting.

One local, a 58-year-old male, expressed his dismay at what happened the previous night, but said was ‘not surprised’.

He said: ‘I knew this was going to happen. I knew it.’

He added: ‘There are guns around here, believe you me.’

Another man called for more police to patrol the area in the hope further such incidents could be prevented.

Another resident said she heard two ‘loud bangs’ around the time of the shooting and knew ‘straight away’ that something was wrong. She then heard ‘about five more’.

The local, a mum, said she was told the man who was shot was not part of any gang-related activities.

She said: ‘I’m still a bit tongue-tied. It was serious stuff.

‘This area is dangerous. This is not the first shooting incident on Waverley Road. This is the hotspot for shootings in the area.

‘I am scared for everybody’s life at this point.’

She said others told her that prior to the shooting there was a large number of ‘individuals’ wearing balaclavas.

She added: ‘Everything here is gang-related.’

Police confirmed no arrests have yet been made and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward, but urged the public not to worry.

Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, who leads policing in Tottenham, said: ‘Two men were shot on a residential street last night, with one man sadly losing his life.

‘We recognise the impact this will have on the local community. We have multiple officers patrolling the area today, aiming to obtain key evidence and provide reassurance to you.

‘At this early stage in the investigation, we have not made any arrests. Please do not let this worry you.

‘We have a highly experienced team of investigators making urgent enquiries to find out who committed this act.

‘I will now ask for anyone who was in the area, past 20:00hrs last night, to please contact police if you heard or saw something suspicious.

‘Your knowledge is crucial to us, and it may help us locate the suspects. Please do the right thing and come forward, you will be supported.’
