A man who fatally knifed a performer during the making of a rap video when he was 18 years old has had his sentence lowered.

Brandon McNeil, now 20, stabbed Shane Jerome in the chest as he rode his motorcycle in a convoy of vehicles following the rapper through Brixton, south London, in July 2021.

McNeil, who had an ‘unhealthy obsession with knives’, was a member of a local gang and probably believed the performers were rivals, though there was no evidence they were, the Old Bailey was told.

He was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 24 years after admitting murder in May last year, but he will now only have to complete 20 years an 8 months in prison after successfully appealing.

Rajiv Menon KC, representing the killer, convinced three judges that the previous sentence did not give enough weight to factors including the defendant’s age and the fact he had been a victim of human trafficking at a young age.

Shane, 23, a scaffolder from Thornton Heath, was said to have no links to the rapper or any gang.

It’s thought he was asked to take part in a ‘drive through’ scene after turning up with friends on his motorcycle.

McNeil was one of a number of males in balaclavas on bikes of their own who ‘came out of nowhere’ and rode towards the convoy.

CCTV showed him riding his bike toward Shane, who was cornered between a car and a bus, before leaping off and stabbing him in the heart.

Clutching his chest, Shane then ran toward an ambulance, where paramedics tried to save him for half an hour before pronouncing him dead after half an hour.

Shane’s girlfriend, Seleka Gathercole, said her heart was ‘torn in two’ after witnessing his death.
