A man has died and another remains in hospital after they were stabbed in east London in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Metropolitan police said officers were called to an east London hospital at about 4.30am where two men had turned up with knife wounds.

A 26-year-old man has died, while officers await a formal assessment of the condition of the other man, aged 24.

They were stabbed in the area of White Post Lane, Hackney Wick.

No arrests have been made yet.

The Met is appealing for witnesses as part of an investigation led by detectives from the specialist crime unit.

The family of the 26-year-old has been informed of his death, and formal identification will take place along with a postmortem.

In a separate incident, a man in his 50s was stabbed to death in Brixton, in south-west London.

Officers were called by the London ambulance service at about 1.30am on Saturday to a critically injured man at a flat in Hicken Road, Brixton, south-west London.

The man was taken to a London hospital and died a short time later.

Another man, also in his 50s, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and has been taken to a south London police station where he remains in custody.

Officers are in the process of informing the deceased’s family.

The force said a postmortem and formal identification will be arranged in due course.

A crime scene is in place at the block of flats in Hicken Road and forensic examination is ongoing.

On Saturday afternoon, a Metropolitan police car was parked at one end of the street with a forensic services van at the other end.

Police and forensic officers were seen on the landing outside a flat in Gale House on Hicken Road.

Neighbours Grace and Heraldo, who did not wish to give their surname, said they were woken by noise at about 3.30am on Saturday.

Heraldo said: “I asked my wife to check through the window and we saw a police car.”

There is no suggestion the incidents in east and south-west London are linked.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics released this week show the number of people stabbed to death reached a record high in England and Wales last year, with 282 people killed using a knife or another sharp object.

The statistics – which cover the year ending in March 2022 – represent the highest annual total of knife-based murders since the Home Office’s homicide index began in 1946.
