Banksy has confirmed artwork that appeared overnight in London is his – and people have been flocking to see it.

The piece in Hornsey Road, Islington, shows a young girl with a spray can looking up at a huge green splatter behind a leafless tree, which makes the paint appear like foliage.

The elusive artist revealed he was behind the graffiti with an Instagram post.

North Islington MP Jeremy Corbyn was among those who were at the scene.

He told Metro.co.uk:  ‘I think he’s helping to improve the urban landscape. It’s quite nice to have the wall painted with this lovely green, which apparently is meant to be the same colour as Islington council’s green.

‘The tree seems to show a message about how we can do more for the environment and more for green spaces, so well done to him.’

He added: ‘Things like this remind people there’s always more to do, and get the conversation going.’

Bridget, who lives across the street, said she heard a bit of noise two nights ago after 2am but didn’t get up to check what it was.

She told Metro.co.uk: ‘This morning I came out of the door and I saw people taking pictures. I asked, “Ah, what is this?” and a woman passing by said someone painted on the wall.

‘I went and looked at it, and thought, “Isn’t this something.” Then my husband told me someone famous did it.’

68-year-old Paul came to London from Wiltshire after seeing news of the art piece, and told Metro.co.uk: ‘There’s always a bit of a fuss surrounding it. I think sometimes that’s equally interesting.’

And Annabelle, 50, dashed over to see the piece before catching her flight at 2pm on Monday: ‘I’m really impressed because I’ve been to some of the exhibitions in Paris and also in Miami, but this was worth the journey.’

George, 61, said it’s great to see Finsbury Park put on the map and said the piece is a testament to how public art can be enjoyed by everyone.

He added: ‘You can see the crowds of all ages as well. It’s lifted my day completely.’

When a woman walked up and asked what was going on, George replied: ‘It’s a Banksy piece. It’s a bit of graffiti by a really famous artist called Banksy, and it’s to make you smile.’

He added: ‘You can interpret it how you like. And maybe that’s the whole point of it, to make people think a little bit more.

‘This street has always been a bit rough, so I think this is great.’

Two men in a work van slowed down as they approached the building.

One yelled out: ‘Is that a Banksy?’ A man yelled back: ‘Yeah mate!’
