Police said an incident took place during the early hours of Saturday in the West End and left the victim in hospital.
The player, 29, was detained at the scene and cannot be named for legal reasons.
A male sustained injuries officers say were not life-changing or life-threatening.
The star has subsequently been released on bail.
A force spokesman said: “A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of two counts of assault and one count of affray.
“He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.”
