Get on the London housing market for £15k as iconic building goes on sale

Fancy yourself an iconic piece of London history?

Although red telephone boxes were once a familiar sight across the UK, their numbers have sadly dwindled over the years.

Luckily, London is still home to many of these landmarks, and much like black cabs and double deckers, they’ve become synonymous with the capital.

Now, you could become the proud owner of one that’s hit the market for £15,000 in Upper Clapton – but hold, dear caller, because there’s a catch.

As it’s a Grade II listed building protected by Historic England, you can’t remove it or alter the exterior, so shelve any grand renovation plans.

Located on a residential road, the box is close to Springfield Park. It’s well-located too, served by Seven Sisters tube and Clapton overground.

Wanting to start a new business venture? The box has planning permission for retail use as well as mains electricity.

This isn’t the first time a telephone box has gone up for sale. In 2022, an iconic red kiosk went up for sale in Kensington, just a stone’s throw from the Palace.

Priced at £45,000, the K6 box measured just 3ft wide and 8ft3 high.

Similarly classified as a Listed Building, the box dated back to the 1930s, and was designed to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V.

The Jubilee kiosks were designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott – the man behind Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, Battersea Power Station and Bankside Power Station, which is now better known as the Tate Modern. The phone boxes were voted the best British design of all time in 2015.

In fact, many of these red kiosks have been transformed into coffee shops, libraries, florists, bakeries and even defibrillators.

Found on the corner of Russell Square Gardens, one box aptly named Walkmisu now serves up tiramisu.

For those that aren’t fans of this iconic Italian dessert (which translates to ‘pick me up’), the shop offers savoury bites in the form of lasagne and arancini.
