Find out if there a by-election in your area this week as thousands of Brits prepare to flock to polling stations thumbnail

Following a series of resignations by members of Parliament, elections are now due to be held in various areas around the country this week.

One of the most prominent of these is the by-election that will take place in the constituency of former prime minister Boris Johnson after he resigned as an MP when he received an advanced copy of the damming House of Commons Privileges Committee report into whether he misled Parliament over the ‘partygate’ scandal.

Nigel Adams, a close ally of Mr Johnson, also announced he would be stepping down after it was widely speculated that he would be named in the former PM’s controversial resignation honours list. However, he was not ultimately given a peerage.

At the time, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Mr Johnson had asked him to do something he wasn’t prepared to do: ‘either overrule the Holac [House of Lords Appointments Commission] committee or make promises to people.’

David Warburton was suspended from the Conservative Party after allegations of sexual misconduct were made against him – which he denied – but resigned as an MP, admitting to drug-taking.

On Sunday, the former MP said allegations of sexual misconduct against him had been withdrawn, with the BBC reporting that a spokesperson for the House of Commons Independent Expert Panel (IEP) had confirmed that ‘the investigation will no longer be proceeding’.

So, will one of these by-elections be taking place in your area?

Read on to find out.

When are by-elections happening in July 2023?

All of the by-elections are scheduled for Thursday, July 20, 2023.

Multiple by-elections are rare. However, when they occur, they are generally scheduled to be on the same date, where possible.

Where could we see by-elections in the future?

As of today, it has been 38 days since former culture minister Nadine Dorries announced she was resigning with immediate effect.

I have today informed the chief whip that I am standing down as the MP for Mid Bedfordshire, with immediate effect.

It has been an honour to serve as the MP for such a wonderful constituency but it is now time for another to take the reins.

While it has been reported that Mrs Dorries is refusing to formally resign as an MP until she has found more information on why she, along with Nigel Adams, was denied a peerage in Boris Johnson’s resignation honours, it is unclear when this means she will leave and trigger a by-election in her constituency of Mid Bedfordshire.

At the weekend, defence secretary Ben Wallace announced he would also be standing down as a member of Parliament. While Mr Wallace has stated that he will stay in post until the next general election, if, for any reason, he chooses to step down before then, it would trigger a by-election in his constituency of Wyre and Preston North.

More than 40 other Conservative members of Parliament have announced they will not stand at the next election, and should any of them choose to leave before that takes place, a by-election would also be triggered.
