The family of a hardworking binman stabbed to death as he walked hisdog have spoken of ‘deep void’ left behind.
Wayne Broadhurst, 49, was killed close to his home in Uxbridge, west London at around 5.30pm on Monday.
Afghan migrant Safi Dawood sat with his head sandwiched between his legs when he appeared in court harged with his murder today.
Mr Broadhurst’s family said: ‘Wayne Broadhurst was a devoted and hardworking man who spent his life serving his community as a waste services worker.
‘He worked hard his whole life, never shying away from improving his community.
‘His love for animals showed the gentle heart behind his strong work ethic, and his passion for Liverpool FC was something he loved to share with others.
‘His loss has left a deep void, not only in the hearts of his family and friends, but across the community he quietly cared for.
‘Wayne will be remembered for his kindness, his loyalty, and his genuine willingness to help others.
‘His absence is felt profoundly, and his memory will continue to live on in our community.’
Safi Dawood is also accused of attempting to murder his landlord Shahzad Farrukh, 45, and a 14-year-old boy.
The 22-year-old, who lived with Mr Farrukh as his lodger at an address in Midhurst Gardens, has also been charged with one count of possessing an offensive weapon, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.
He entered the UK in a lorry in 2020 before claiming asylum, which was granted in 2022, the Home Office previously confirmed.
His partner Ann Newman has paid tribute to Mr Broadhurst as “a hardworking man who dedicated his life to serving his community”.
Writing on a GoFundMe page that has raised more than £35,000 Ms Newman said: ‘We are heartbroken to announce the tragic loss of our beloved Wayne Broadhurst, a hardworking man who dedicated his life to serving his community through his work in waste collection.’
One neighbour told Metro: ‘No one in our community would have a bad word to say about this lovely man. He was unbelievably and shockingly killed near his own home.
‘He was a quietly spoken, unobtrusive man and wouldn’t hurt a fly. He went to work and then home – that was it. He was in a long-term solid relationship and they loved eachother.’
She added: ‘He was devoted to his beautiful dog. The dog is at home and safe and well.
‘He lived for his dog. That’s what we’re all saying that his beloved pet witnessed the killing of his dad. That would have broken his heart more than anything.’
Mihai Cucicea, 35, who has lived in the area for more than 10 years, said Mr Broadhurst was a ‘normal, genuine English person’.
Mr Cucicea told Metro: ‘He was the guy who swept up the streets. He was a nice guy who would do his job and then sometimes have a beer around the corner at the shops when his work was done and walk his dog.’
