A ‘dramatic’ fire has broken out in a residential area in south London tonight.

Plumes of dark smoke can be seen billowing in the sky above Elephant and Castle.

Accounts of the incident – believed to be taking place in the Walworth Road area – first appeared around 7.30pm.

Footage shared on Twitter shows flames rising above a vehicle parked right next to a block of flats.

Neither the cause or the location of the blaze have been confirmed yet by London Fire Brigade.

Social media has been flooded with videos of the ‘crazy’ fire as the area filled with smoke.

‘Elephant and Castle filling with smoke from a fire somewhere in Walworth. Hope people are ok,’ one person tweeted.

Another wrote: ‘You can see the fire in Elephant and Castle from the rooftop bar I am at. Oh lord.’

Pictures from the scene show about a dozen firefighters in protective gear and at least one fire engine.

It is still unclear if residents have been urged to evacuate their homes. No advice has also been shared by authorities online.

Metro.co.uk has contacted the London Fire Brigade for a further comment.
