It almost seems daft talking about snow in March, as spring is surely due to be sprung any day now?
Alas, the promise of a glimmer of sunlight and nature blooming bright seems a touch further away than it did before.
There’s a cold snap sweeping large parts of the country, and Monday, March 6 is set to be the UK’s coldest day so far this year – and there’s also talk of wintry showers to come.
Often it’s easy to assume any snowfall is only going to affect northern parts of the country – but is any scheduled to head down further south and to London this month?
Here’s what we know so far.
Could it snow in London in March 2023?
It just might, say the latest weather forecasts (at the time of writing).
From Monday, March 6 to Tuesday, March 7, the Met Office has yellow weather warnings for snow and ice in place across swathes of the UK – including London and the South East.

London’s warning is in place from 9pm on Monday night until 10am the following morning.
The Met Office advises people to prepare for some ‘ice and some snow leading to difficult travel conditions in places’ – warning in particular of disruption to trains, other public transport and icy patches on un-gritted roads, paths and cycling lanes.
So much for springtime, eh?
Judging by their London forecast, Tuesday, March 7 is set to see the capital’s temperatures plummet to -1°C, as Arctic air rolls in, with snow forecast for the early morning.
On Wednesday, March 8, the Met Office predicts overcast skies, a still-cold 1°C temperature, plus a chance of sleet and possibly snow, which the BBC’s forecast echoes.
However, it seems the rest of the week is going to remain overcast, possibly rainy and windy, but a good few degrees warmer, though of course predictions may change.
That said, the Met Office’s long-range forecast for the whole UK, from Friday, March 10 onwards, does seem to suggest snow is faintly possible down south later in the month, too.
It says: ‘On Friday, very cold conditions are expected across the far north, accompanied by snow showers, although some sunny spells are possible away from any showers.
‘Elsewhere, milder, cloudier conditions are likely, with outbreaks of rain and some stronger winds possible. There is a small chance of more disruptive snowfall, particularly over hills.’
From Monday, March 20 into April 2023, the meteorological office adds that ‘rain and strong winds are more likely in the south, with a lower risk of snow at times’.

It continues: ‘These milder conditions may extend north periodically, but it’s possible that the cold but bright weather could return south to all parts through late March, bringing a return to drier conditions to the south.’
Back to the week beginning March 6, and it’s not just London and southern England affected by a brrr-worthy cold snap and Met Office yellow weather warnings.
Also hit by warnings are parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and North East England.
Scotland and the North East’s warnings are slightly longer than the others, extending to all of Monday and Tuesday, and remaining in place until 10am on Wednesday morning.
