A man who climbed to the top of a famous statue had to be rescued by firefighters on a cherry picker.

The man was filmed clambering to the top of the Eros statue in Piccadilly Circus, London, on Wednesday evening – before apparently deciding to simply scroll through his phone.

Police and firefighters raced to the scene and cordoned off the area – and the Tube station was also closed for more than an hour.

But the man didn’t seem interested in the gathering crowds and emergency services below him, as he continued to look at his mobile.

He was seen straddling one of the legs of the Eros statue in order to keep his balance.

Firefighters on a cherry picker spoke to the man and they left the scene at around 8pm – two hours after he made the climb.

A fire brigade spokesperson said:  ‘Firefighters were called at 6.12pm to reports of a man who had climbed a fountain in Piccadilly Circus.

‘Two fire engines were sent to the scene and one of the Brigade’s 32 metre turntable ladders also attended.

‘Crews liaised with Metropolitan Police officers before leaving the incident in the care of the Met shortly after 8pm.’
