One person has died and four others are injured after a 20-metre crane collapsed at a building site in Bow, east London, destroying at least two houses.
Firefighters are now at the scene of the incident on Gale Street, with early reports claiming a man was ‘crushed’ by the crane as it fell around 2.40pm this afternoon.
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: ‘We treated four people at the scene. We treated two of these patients for head injuries and took them to hospital and we assessed the other two patients at the scene.
‘Sadly, despite the efforts of emergency services, a fifth person was found and died at the scene.’
The London Fire Brigade tweeted: ‘We’ve taken fourteen 999 calls to reports of a crane that has collapsed onto a building in Gale Street, Bow. More updates when we have them but please avoid the area.’
Shocking footage from the scene of the incident shows the badly damaged roof of a residential building close to the site. It also appears the crane smashed a wall with fence panelling and narrowly missed several parked cars.
Describing the scene, Twitter user Bridget Teirney, who shared the clip online, said: ‘Crane behind my building just collapsed in Bow, London. At least one man crushed, crane went through two houses.’
She later added that the man, ‘who is responding and being assisted by fire and ambulance services’ , was trapped underneath the crane before confirming that he had been released. He is now being treated by paramedics, she said.
The crane driver is believed to have made it down to the ground, but some people remain trapped inside their homes.
A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service confirmed a number of crews and a team of specialist paramedics who work in hazardous environments are also at the scene.
They added: ‘The incident is ongoing and we are working closely with other members of the emergency services at the scene.’
Another video shared by London Fire Brigade showed several police officers and firefighters urging members of the public to move back as they tended to the incident.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Met Police said: ‘At approximately 14:39hrs on Wednesday, 8 July, police were called to Gale Street, E3 to a report of a crane that has collapsed into a residential property and a building site.
‘Officers are on scene. We have received reports of four people suffering injuries at this time. Road closures are in place and police are assisting the local authority.’
